Last spring, Rutgers University Chapter of Kappa Omicron Nu received a grant from the University of Tennessee to implement in GetFruved Program. The program's target audience are college students with its aim to help the college students manage their weight and to live healthier. GetFruved focuses on three specific areas to achieve its goal. They are: to improve dietary intake, increase physical activity, and to improve stress management skills.
So far I have worked with the Rutgers University GetFruved Representative in gathering baseline data of the campus such as demographics and identifying the locations where most students obtain their meals. After we identified the locations such as the dining hall, the student center food court, and privately owned restaurants, we needed to complete surveys that assessed how healthy the meals were according to the rubric that was provided. The surveys also asked if the locations promoted their meals and if they did, were the promoted meals primarily healthy or unhealthy (ex: baked or fried foods).
Kappa Omicron Nu is currently working on organizing future events and partnering with other campus organizations that promote wellness. One major event that will be held to represent GetFruved will occur during March, when KON and Rutgers University Nutrition Club will co-sponsor the Eating Disorder Awareness Symposium. This past March, the event was a great success and the attendees were able to learn more about eating disorders and some even shared their stories of overcoming their eating disorders. As this year's Guest Speaker Coordinator, it will be my responsibility to contact speakers for this event.
