Thanks to the Federal Work Study Program, I was able to obtain a job as a student worker at the Math and Science Learning Center (MSLC). Since my freshman year in college I have been a competent and reliable employee. During my junior year, I was also able to direct patrons of the facility away from the building when there was a suspected oil leak. Luckily the maintenance staff determined the event as a false alarm, but my quick thinking and level mindedness helped facilitate the situation.
Currently as one of the student managers of the Douglass campus MSLC, my responsibilities include updating the work schedule and ensuring that the facility runs smoothly. My supervisors are located primarily on the Busch campus where the Busch MSLC is located. Thus it is my and the other Douglass student managers to ensure that we can resolve any problem that may arise in our building. We ensure that the teaching assistants have access to room space and resource materials, resolve any issues from the computer lab, and oversee that the student workers are complying with the rules of the establishment.
In the events where problems have arose, the other student managers and I work together to discuss and resolve the issue. We discuss our possible alternatives and attempt to choose the most fair and rational choice. There are rules set in place which guide most of our decisions, but it is also important to take into consideration the context of the situations, as emergencies can occur without notice.
